Dear Parents and Community Members

Many of our parents, old boys and current students are very saddened by the passing away of Mr Richard Stagno Navarra last Saturday. Richard was an extremely skillful and dedicated member of the English Department at College and a valued member of our College.

Mr Stagno Navarra was associated with the College for many years:

16 January 1995 - He joined St Edward’s College as a teacher of English and that same year he obtained the IGCSE First Language English Certificate from Cambridge which allowed him to assess students’ coursework  for IGCSE.

September 1998 – House Tutor – Yr 10

June 2005  Retired from teaching.

1 September 2008  - Re-instated as full time teacher of English and History and Head of English Department.  He was also the House Tutor for Year 11 Ducane.

June 2009  Retired again from teaching but always kept in touch with the College.

Mr Stagno Navarra was very much admired and respected by both boys and Staff. There were numerous current Year 12 students and OE’s who attended the funeral to farewell this fine gentleman.

I kindly ask that you keep Richard and his family in your prayers.

Helping Those in Need – Fay Farrugia

This year I will be spending my summer months in Salasaca, Ecuador. The reason for doing this stems from the incredible experience in helping out the Mother Theresa Missionaries of Charity in Cusco, Peru last summer.

My intention is to work with advancement of education in the community. I will participate in a number of volunteer programs and attempt to set up new volunteer projects for the foundation http://sumakkausayyachay.blogspot.com/.  Importantly, I will use the experiences and skills I have acquired through St Edward’s College and other projects to provide the best educational opportunities for this community considering that this local village needs plenty of assistance.

I hope that having worked with students with vastly different needs in Malta will serve as a good basis for setting up language and literacy programmes. Instruction through crafts, music, puppet shows / drama and other multi-sensory means will also form a central part of my work.

I would like to thank all those people who placed an interest in the project and contributed to the Ecuador fund. I feel that this project has made me realise the humanitarian spirit of the Maltese society. It has also served as an opportunity to inform St Edward’s pupils about the realities of our world and to promote the value in reaching out to the less fortunate.

It has been pleasing to see the boys’ competitive spirit in this project and the energy channelled into making food sales, class contributions and weekly Thursday Mass collection. A group of boys also went around the school during break time to encourage (or may I say, forcefully persuade) educational staff to donate money to the extent that I am not even fully aware of which members of staff placed contributions.

Those of you who are interested in seeing images and viewing more information on my work please visit www.free-volunteer.com

Changes to some Classes

There will be some fine-tuning to the composition of some classes. This will happen during the holiday period. Please do not ask or request information about this matter as work is on-going.

Please note that Year 6 will move to the Middle School next year.

Attention Year 1 and Year 2 parents

Please remember to send in all your son's reading books in a bag with his name on it.

Next year's reading books will be provided by the school in line with our individualised reading programme.
